Australian Healthcare Associates Survey

Australian Healthcare Associates (AHA), on behalf of the Australian Government, is currently exploring how to improve access to Auslan interpreting services in primary care settings (e.g. general practice, physiotherapy, psychology). An important part of this project is understanding what it is like to organise and use an interpreter for a primary care appointment.

This project is reviewing access to Auslan interpreting services in primary care settings. Primary care refers to services provided in the community by a general practitioner, nurse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker or Practitioner, or allied health professional (see list below). Primary care does not include any healthcare provided in a hospital.

If you are over 18 and use Auslan to communicate or have a role in organising interpreters for an Auslan user in your family, you can help! We invite you to share your experience in Auslan or English, in a short online survey or an interview with one of the AHA team. Participating in this review is voluntary. If you don’t want to take part, you don’t have to. Your decision to take part or not take part, or to take part and then withdraw, will not affect your current or future relationships with health professionals or Auslan interpreters. If you decide to take part, you can do so between 1 May and 30 June 2023.

If you decide to participate, we will need about 15 minutes of your time to ask you a few questions about yourself and:

  • the types of health professionals you visit in primary care settings
  • the people that usually interpret at your primary care appointments
  • the process for organising a NAATI-certified interpreter
  • what is important to you when organising and using Auslan interpreters in primary

You can choose to answer the questions in either a survey or interview format:

  • Online survey: visit on any device that is connected to the internet. Each question will be presented in Auslan and You will select your response to each question from a list of numbered options.
  • Online interview: email We will follow up with you to identify your preferred time and platform (e.g. Zoom). If you would like to participate in Auslan we will provide Video Remote Interpreting using a NAATI-certified interpreter.

If you would like to participate but neither of the options above are suitable, please contact us at and we will do our best to find an alternative.

If you answer any of the survey or interview questions, you are agreeing to be involved in the review and to us using the information you provide.
